Cupid showed up

Forget what you see in children’s book or what you’ve watched in the movies when it comes to reality, cupid can take the shape of anyone. In the case of Harry and Meghan, the cupid was in the form of Violet von Westenholz. Violet is a member of Harry’s friend circle and the daughter of a Baron, and a close friend of Prince Charles. According to E! News, she met Meghan via her work doing public relationships for Ralph Lauren and brought the two of them together in the summer of 2016.

After hitting it off, Miss. Markle joined Prince Harry on a secret trip to Africa. However, they kept it under wraps until a year later when they revealed the secret trip in their official engagement interview. Harry said “I think about three, maybe four weeks later that I managed to persuade her to come and join me in Botswana. And we camped out with each other under the stars… she came and joined me for five days out there, which was absolutely fantastic,” “So then we were really by ourselves. Which I think… was crucial to me to make sure we had a chance to get to know each other” He added.

The raging storm

Looking at the stunning photos, the romantic body language of the two lovebirds, one would think it was all rosy for the hottest couple. It wasn’t the case; their relationship experienced a raging storm that threatened the love they have for each other.

November 8 dawned with surprised news when Prince Harry made things official. Prince Harry took a courageous and unrivalled stand to support his new girlfriend. The Prince released a statement through his communications secretary condemning abuse directed at his new love.

“The past week has seen a line crossed. His girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment. Some of this has been very public — the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones; the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments. Some of it has been hidden from the public – the nightly legal battles to keep defamatory stories out of papers; her mother having to struggle past photographers, in order to get to her front door. The attempts of reporters and photographers to gain illegal entry to her home and the calls to police that followed; the substantial bribes offered by papers to her ex-boyfriend; the bombardment of nearly every friend, co-worker, and loved one in her life,” the statement read. It also included a personal appeal, asking readers to respect their relationship:

“It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms Markle should be subjected to such a storm. He knows commentators will say this is ‘the price she has to pay’ and that ‘this is all part of the game.’ He strongly disagrees. This is not a game — it is her life and his.”

Spilled beans…

Prince Harry made a trip to Antigua later in November 2016. Prime Minister Gaston Browne was forthcoming with Prince Harry’s new romance. He stated “I believe we are expecting a new princess soon. I want you to know that you are very welcome to come on your honeymoon here… there will be nowhere in the world as special to spend your honeymoon when that day arrives,” he told the seemingly shy Prince.

Trouble brewed again when rumors erupted toward the end of November that Prince William wasn’t happy with his brother’s love affair, another statement was released by Kensington Palace. This time, William came forward to confirm his brother’s relationship. It read: “The Duke of Cambridge absolutely understands the situation concerning privacy and supports the need for Prince Harry to support those closest to him.”

The Queen’s approval

Us Weekly reported yet again in December 2016 that a prominent family member had also given Meghan Markle her seal of approval. Us Weekly sources claimed that Queen Elizabeth II had weighed in on Prince Harry’s new lady and was “fully supportive” of the couple’s relationship.

Let thy will be done

Miss. Meghan announced that she would be closing down The Tig (her lifestyle website) she wrote a personal note on Instagram explaining the site’s closure. She wrote “What began as a passion project (my little engine that could) evolved into an amazing community of inspiration, support, fun and frivolity. You’ve made my days brighter and filled this experience with so much joy. Keep finding those Tig moments of discovery, keep laughing and taking risks, and keep being ‘the change you wish to see in the world.” Her actions stirred speculation that she did it because she and Harry were getting more serious and a future royal wife wouldn’t be allowed to run such a website.

E! News cameras caught Prince Harry arriving at Meghan’s home with a duffel bag as he tried to hide his identity by putting on a baseball cap in April 2017. TMZ took a picture of Miss Markle wearing a ring on her left index finger that same week.

November 27, 2017, Clarence House announced the engagement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle via twitter: “The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince Harry to Ms Meghan Markle. The wedding will take place in spring 2018.” The statement further noted that the couple “became engaged earlier this month,” that the queen and Meghan’s parents had all given their blessing and that the couple planned to live in Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace in London.
